My name is Mariah and I’m organizing a film festival in London in September called Little Wing Film Festival. It’s exclusively for first-time filmmakers, students, and recent graduates, and the premise is that I want to be able to reward them in more ways than just exposure – ways that will help facilitate their next project.
I’m a recent graduate myself, and the whole idea for this initiative grew out of the frustration and exploitation I was feeling, as were my peers, in trying to find paid work when getting your foot in the creative door. So I’ve created this festival to try and combat that struggle in some small way and, hopefully, in the long term be a pebble in the pond of changing attitudes towards unpaid work. We’re starting off as a small festival, but have huge potential for growth.
I was hoping you might be interested in sharing this with students, as we’ve been sponsored with some great prizes for our award winners. Currently, all submissions will receive a 3-month membership to the online pitching platform iPITCH.TV, and award winners receive an array or prizes like cinematography equipment, hundreds of dollars-worth of editing software, and a year’s worth of free licensed music.
Submissions are coming to a close reasonably soon, so if this is something you think could be included in any social media or publications, or by word of mouth, I’d love to help get the word out and involve as many students and grads from the US as possible to broaden the perspectives and stories told throughout the festival.
